Why I started Captive Photography

Hey, I’m Emily.

I've been working on my clothing brand, Simple Gay Apparel, for the last 4 years, taking thousands and thousands of photos of my clothing designs, of myself, and of my customers wearing and modeling my clothing designs.

Doing photoshoots with my customers has been some of the most fulfilling, immersive, and rewarding work I’ve done for my clothing brand. I always walk away in awe of what we created together — how synergistic the shoots are, and how, through looking through my camera lens, and giving encouragement and direction to my customers who have never modeled before, that we can capture some really amazing shots.

Before doing all of the photography for my clothing brand, I was the family photographer. I took photos of our family trips and captured important moments in my brother's and sister's lives.

As a photographer, I pride myself on my attention to detail, my eye for getting that perfect shot, and the way I find such humanity in the in-between moments. That's where the great photos are. They aren't found in a "smile at the camera" moment, but rather in all the living, breathing moments of life.

I also pride myself on the environment that I create with my photography clients. There are no mistakes in our sessions. There’s just trying stuff, leaning into the stuff that works, laughter, smiles, and I must admit, I do tend to exclaim “slay” a lot, in genuine spillover of joy about what we’re making together and the poses that you’re pulling. Ah! I love it. I love capturing people; everyone has stunning angles and moments, and I love to find, appreciate, and encourage them with genuine affirmation!

I am excited to work with you.
